Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat until shimmering.
  2. Add the sweet Italian sausage and cook for about 7 to 10 minutes, turning until browned. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  3. In the same skillet, lower heat and add 1 tablespoon of Italian seasoning, 2 teaspoons of fresh basil, and 4 minced garlic cloves. Stir for about 2 minutes.
  4. Pour in ½ cup of Marsala wine and 1 can of diced tomatoes. Add 1 tablespoon of tomato paste and red pepper flakes if desired.
  5. Stir in 2 sliced bell peppers and 1 sliced yellow onion. Season with salt and pepper. Bring to a simmer for about 5 minutes.
  6. Slice the browned sausage and mix back into the skillet. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes.
  7. Serve hot over mashed potatoes, pasta, or in hoagie rolls.
